The debate over the risks climate change poses to the economy in general and financial companies in particular took an official turn late last week. President Biden issued an executive order giving the Treasury Department six months to recommend how financial regulation, federal lending, and procurement policy should all be revamped to encourage more private-sector capital to flow into clean energy and other climate-friendly investments, as Quartz put it. The order got a lot of press coverage – from NPR to Scientific American and Rolling Stone to CNBC – but not much in the way of industry reaction. It will be interesting to watch this evolve beyond the headlines.
