Deposit Growth Accelerates as Charter Approvals Surge
U.S. bank deposits reached $19.05 trillion as of June 30, up 5.2% from a year earlier, compared with and faster than the 4% growth in 2025, S&P Global Market Intelligence reported. Deposits at the 15 largest bank holding companies grew even faster, rising 7% and increasing their combined share of U.S. deposits to 57.17%. Fifth Third Bancorp posted the largest increase following its acquisition of Comerica, while Goldman Sachs recorded the strongest organic growth.
Regulators approved 29 bank charter applications through Sept. 11, more than double the 14 approved in all of 2025, according to another S&P article. Fintechs were behind several recent approvals, including Revolut, Mercury, Upstart and Nubank.
