Debit cards and rentals cars
Hello Mary. We experienced this issue with Hertz. A customer rented a car, drove it across country, and never returned. Hertz presented a transaction for $14K using a force post code and based upon a previous, much smaller, authorization which according to VISA the bank did not have the right to refuse and/or return the transaction. We made the decision to block our customers from being able to use their card at car rental companies. This is unfortunate but the bank was no longer comfortable with the risk. I called the local Hertz and discussed the transaction with them. They knew how it was presented was wrong and basically told me they didn't care and were going to do whatever they could to recover their loss.
I spoke with our card provider who filed a complaint with VISA on our behalf regarding Hertz's behavior. Our representative tells me to be patient but so far no action has been taken against Hertz.

Our bank just got hit for a debit card charge of $14,000 for a Nov. 2021 transaction/authorization that was for $600. Something like this has happened to us before, and now we are considering not allowing our debit cards to be used at rental car companies because of the rules allowing them to come back later for huge charges. Is this even on the radar screen for any of you?
