When I started in banking years ago, I realized that many bank executives focused on portfolio yields and yet often had a disproportionate fear of unrealized losses, but really didn't know how to balance these factors as they considered their performance goals.  In response, I built my approach to Total Return analysis to look back at historical results and forward with forecasts at the impact of alternative investment and funding choices.

With the recent and projected volatility in interest rates today, I thought this audience might like access to a simple Excel spreadsheet that calculates the total return for a holding period for individual fixed income securities.
