Banks Manage the $10B Threshold as Loan Growth Strengthens
Some banks nearing $10 billion in assets are pursuing acquisitions large enough to move decisively past the threshold, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, while others are actively managing their balance sheets to remain below it due to the Durbin amendment’s interchange revenue impact and higher regulatory costs.
A separate S&P article noted that loan growth accelerated into early 2026, with year-over-year growth exceeding 6% in February, driven largely by lending to nondepository financial institutions and commercial and industrial borrowers.
